CLOQUET – Homecoming activities made for a real festive night in Cloquet on Friday. Annabel Morrisroe and James Northrup were crowned royalty for the 2010-2011 school year. As exciting as the assortment of events made the evening, the Hermantown Hawks were able to put a bit of a damper on things by defeating the Lady Lumberjacks by a score of 61-37.

The Hawks got things going right out of the gate and led 6-0 on back to back 3-pointers by Carmen Bergstedt and Andrea Enockson. The Jacks came back with a couple of quick baskets to cut the lead to 6-4, but that was as close as they would get on the evening. From that point the Hawks went on a 9-2 run and had Cloquet playing catch up for the rest of the contest.

Although the Hawks took an eight point 33-25 lead into the locker room at halftime, statistically the game was fairly close. The Jacks committed 11 turnovers which Hermantown converted into 13 points. Hermantown pretty much returned the favor by committing 10 turnovers which led to 14 points for Cloquet. Hermantown shot a bit better from the field (44% to 33%) but was only 1-4 from the free throw line while the Jacks were 5-8.

Cloquet’s attempt at a second half comeback took a substantial hit when star center and homecoming queen Morrisroe could not return for the second half due to illness. Without Morrisroe’s inside presence Cloquet was able to hang with the Hawks for a while but a 19-4 run midway through the second half increased the Hermantown lead to 59-36 and all but ended any hopes the Jacks had for a comeback.

The biggest factor for the Hawks in the second half was their ability to shoot the ball from the field, shooting 58% in the half and raising their game total to 51% on 30-58 shooting. Cloquet by comparison struggled in the shooting department hitting only 25% in the second stanza without Morrisroe.

Rachael Hoium led the Hawks and all scorers with 24 points including a perfect 2-2 on three pointers. Mary Neumann joined Hoium in double figures with 14 points. Others scoring for the Hawks were Carmen Bergstedt with 9 points, Emily Neumann with 6. Katie Thun turned in a perfect night going 2-2 form the field and 1-1 from the line for 5 points. Jess Harper added four points, Andrea Enockson and Nicole Kucza added 3 points each, Ally Dieryck, Molly Kolquist, and Andrea Ruberg all finished with 2 points, while Melissa Madison rounded out the Hawks scoring with 1 point.

Krista Schmitz had the hot hand for the Jacks, shooting 50% from the field including 3-4 on three pointers and leading Cloquet with 15 points. Kenzie Rathe was also in double digits, picking up some of the slack inside with 10 points. Felicia Hraban added 5 points, Morrisroe and Shania Paulson each ended with 4, Avery Bieri and Sarah McMillen had 3 points each while Kayla Masessa ended with 2 points in the loss.

With the win Hermantown is now 12-6 on the season. The Hawks will be off until Thursday when they host Duluth East. Cloquet falls to 6-12 and will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Proctor to take on the Rails.
