CLOQUET – An inability to finish their plays left the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton boys hockey team scratching their heads following a 4-1 loss to the Marshall Hilltoppers last night. The Jacks outshot the Hilltoppers 50-31, and had four power play chances, but they struggled in getting the puck past goalie Christian Coffman.

Early on it looked like CEC would run away with the game. The Jacks came out with plenty of hop in their skates and stuck an early goal with Mark Savage powering a shot into the net just 59 seconds into the first period. Adam Hanson and Drew Dincau assisted on the play. CEC put plenty of pressure on Coffman and threw 20 shots on the netminder in the first period alone.

Barely two minutes after CEC scored the Hilltoppers evened the score on a goal by Jordan Shockley and the teams came out of the first period even at 1-1.

Neither team could find the net in the second period, but the Hilltoppers converted three times in the final period to take the win. At 10:08 it was Derrick Howard, at 11:20 it was Judd Peterson and Mac Dow ended the scoring when he tapped a puck into the empty net with just 25 seconds remaining in the game.

CEC goalie, John Scheuer finished with 27 saves on 31 shots. The Jacks went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Hilltoppers went 0-for-1 with a man advantage.
