MOOSE LAKE – The second period was a wild affair on Tuesday night between the Proctor Rails and the Moose Lake Area Rebels boys hockey teams. Proctor came in averaging 5.4 goals per game while MLA averaged 4.5. As anticipated, the contest lived up to its billing with five goals scored in the second period of a game that eventually saw Proctor skate away to a 5-3 victory.

“We both play a similar style,” explained Proctor Head Coach Tim Schnobrich. Adding, “We’ve had a bit of a tough stretch the last week or so. We tried to get too fancy and that is not who we are. Hockey is a simple game. When we play it that way and work hard we can have some success.”

Frank Katzmarek scored the only goal of the first period at 10:31 giving the Rails a 1-0 lead entering what would turn out to be a crazy second stanza of play.

Jake Cisar scored at 2:54 for the Rebels to tie the game, but at 3:24 the Rails took the lead back at 2-1 on a goal by Justin Scanlon. Then at 5:15 the Rebels evened things at 2-2 on a goal by Zack Cisar, but again the Rails answered with a marker by Jeremy Lopez at 9:09. Then at 16:23 it was Griffin Swanson netting another goal for the Rails who took a 4-2 lead into the third period.

Although the Rebels were on the wrong end of the 5-3 score, MLA first year head coach Josh Gamst was complimentary of his team, Explaining. “They were a bit deeper than we are, we went with two lines for most of the night and just kept battling, and that’s how we deal with adversity.” “I am real proud of the kids; it was definitely an A+ effort tonight. We have ten games left and if we get this kind of effort every night we will win a lot of games,” Gamst added.

Jake Cisar gave the Rebels life with a power play goal at 3:39 of the final period, but again the Rails answered at 9:47 on a goal by Brandon Morin to make the final 5-3.

“We knew they weren’t going to give up. They are a hard working team and have a real good goalie. But we kept our feet moving and Brandon gave us a little breathing room,” mentioned Schnobrich.

Ryan McCarthy finished with 18 saves for Proctor in goal, while Austin Lanoue had 31 saves in the Rebel loss.

With the win, Proctor advances their record to 11-5-1. They will be off until next Tuesday when they host Hermantown. The Hawks sport a 14-0-1 record and are Minnesota’s lone unbeaten team. MLA will host North Branch on Thursday at Riverside Arena.
