Cloquet Boys Get Second Win of The Season

The Cloquet Lumberjacks defeated the Ashland Oredockers 57-52 in a Lake Superior Conference match-up at home. Cloquet picked up their second win of the season and ended a five game losing stretch for the Lumberjacks.

The Lumberjacks used balanced scoring and good defense as they worked there way to their second win on the season. It was a combination of young and old that worked together that provided the Lumberjack victory.

Senior Andy Wappes led a trio of players in double figures Tuesday night in the win. The first half saw the game open with both teams trading baskets back and forth; at about the nine minute mark Zach Peterson hit a three-pointer which put Cloquet ahead to stay. The Lumberjacks continued to build their lead to as many as ten points following a Dillon Johnson three pointer.

Ashland did cut into the Lumberjack lead as they closed the gap to three points at 32-29 at halftime. The second half saw both teams make mini-runs and the Oredockers tied the game at 46-46 with four minutes remaining. However the Lumberjacks stood fast as Peterson, Wappes and Johnson all nailed shots which gave Cloquet a seven point lead with under a minute to play as they went on to win by five points.

Andy Wappes led all scorers with 22 points for Cloquet. Wappes also added a game high 10 rebounds in the win. Dillon Johnson added 13 points, Zach Peterson punched in 12, Sean Ferrell and Cody Stevens added 4 points each and Maxx Brenner finished the scoring with 2 points on the night. Brock Mrdjenovich led the Oredockers with 18 points in the loss.

The Lumberjacks are back in action on Thursday night when they host the Duluth Central Trojans in a Lake Superior Conference match-up. The Lumberjacks will then have a week. They will be back in action again on Friday January 21st when they play at Mesabi East.
