The Clydesdales rang in the New Year with a much-needed win against Thunder Bay Saturday night, pushing themselves to 8-23-2 and back into a tie for 5th in the Superior International Junior Hockey League.

Despite being outshot in each period, the home team made their chances count, taking down the visiting North Stars 5-2. The first period was played evenly, with Duluth striking first with Casey Eckman assisting on a Matt Jerulle goal 4:17 in. Thunder Bay tied it up a few minutes later on a marker from Dan Usiski, assisted by Mitch Forbes.

Duluth roared back in the second, with Julius Tamasy striking at 9:16 to put Duluth back on top. Tamasy would assist on two Joe Nelson goals at 6:49 and :33, with a Thunder Bay tip-in by former Clydesdale Matt Morsette in between at 3:57. Duluth then took that 4-2 lead into the locker room for the second intermission.

At 5:29 into the third, the Clydesdales chased North Star starter Guillaume Piche from the game on Jerulle’s second marker of the night, this time helped by Luke Burgstahler and Lee Melde on that final goal of the night.

Cody Stocker earned the win for Duluth, stopping 33 of 35 shots. Piche took the loss for Thunder Bay, making 17 saves before being replaced with Pelletier, who stopped all 4 shots he saw in the final 14:31. The two teams match up once again tomorrow night, same time, same place, the Heritage Center at 6:00 pm.
