HERMANTOWN – Coming off a 60-37 win over Warroad in the Esko Coaches Classic, the Hermantown Hawks stayed red hot by overpowering the Cloquet Lumberjacks 58-33 at home on a snowy Tuesday evening in Hermantown.


Pressure defense was a key for the Hawks. Hermantown forced a total of 36 turnovers, 22 in the first half alone. The superb guard play allowed the Hawks to jump out to a 27-4 lead and close out the first half by a margin of 41-12. On the night, 29 of the Hawks 58 points came off of turnovers.


The Hawks were led by Rachael Hoium with 14 points and 5 rebounds. Mary Newman joined her in double figures with 10 points and 5 rebounds. Others scoring for the Hawks were Nicole Kucza with 9, Carmen Bergstedt and Ally Dieryck with 6 points each, Andrea Enockson with 4, and Jess Harper, Melissa Madison, and Molly Kolquist, all with 2 points each.


Jacks super post player Annabel Morrisroe led the Jacks with 12 points and 7 rebounds. Kenzie Rathe scored 8, Felicia Hraban added 4, Carri Zeadow 3, and Avery Bieri, Amy Campbell, and Kayla Masessa rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.


With the win, Hermantown moves their record to 5-3 on the season. They will be off until after the Christmas break, hosting Eveleth-Gilbert on Jan 4.


Cloquet is now 2-5 on the season. The Jacks will be back in action when they host the Wood City Classic on Dec 28 and 29. The games will be played at the Cloquet Middle School, giving them a bit of a throwback feel.
