CLOQUET – Trevor Olson scored a pair of shorthanded goals and the Duluth East Greyhounds got a shutout performance in net from goalie JoJo Jeanetta in a 4-0 victory over Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in boys hockey at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center on Thursday night.

The Lumberjacks stumbled in the first period and trailed 3-0 after the opening stanza. After a Phil Beaulieu goal at 5:37 the Jacks went on the power play and appeared to have a great chance to tie the game, only to have Olson score the first of his two shorty’s at 11:10 giving East a 2-0 edge. Before the first period ended it was Steve Holappa banging in a goal at 16:12 just a couple of minutes after he came out of the penalty box and CEC was down 3-0.

While the Greyhounds, who are ranked in the Top 10 in the state, controlled the play, the Jacks did a better job of keeping shots to the outside in the second and third periods allowing goalie John Scheuer a better chance to make the save.

Among the biggest problems for CEC was the ability of the Greyhounds to slip unnoticed behind the Jacks defense and come in on Scheuer uncontested. That is exactly how Olson scored the final goal of the game at the 6:28 mark of the third period.

For the game Scheuer finished with 23 saves on 27 shots, while Jeanetta made 22 saves to get the shutout.

With the loss CEC is now 4-3 on the season.
They will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Ashland to take on the Oredockers.
