Superior Hammers River Falls

The Superior Spartans defeated River Falls by a score 49-14 Friday nightat the Spartans Sports Complex in Superior, moving them into first place in the Big Rivers Conference.

Superior got on the scoreboard first when Ross Kennelly plowed into the end zone from 3 yards out, with Mckenzie Schwarz converting the kick to give them the early 7-0 lead. River Falls answered back though, with Logan Emholtz getting across the goal line from 1 yard out, with Colton Larson getting the PAT to tie it up at 7-7. Superior turned on the jets from there, with Nick Mehlum getting into the end zone from 4 yards out to push the lead to 14-0. Kennelly then hooked up with Mehlum on a 15 yard pass to increase the Spartans lead to 21-7 going into half.

On the opening kickoff of the second half, Jake Libal took it back 89 yards to push the lead up to 28-7. Beau Girard would hook up with Mehlum on a 31 yard touchdown pass, making it 35-7. Libal would have another return, this time off a punt, returning it 43 yards to increase the lead to 42-7. River Falls would cut into the lead with a 4 yard scamper from Logan Emholtz to make it 42-14, but Superiors Zach Tharge showed some wheels late in the game, finding the end zone after a 40 yard run to make it a final of 49-14.

The Spartans now improve to 5-1 on the season and will play Rice Lake at home on October 3rd.
