Jaguars Spoil Parent Night

BARNUM- Friday night in Barnum hopes were high for the Bombers to pick up their first win of the season as the Bombers players and parents were celebrating Parents night on the field, but it was the Jaguars who spoiled parents night as Hinckley-Finlayson scored a touchdown with 22 seconds remaining to beat the Bombers 14-12.

The Jaguars scored the games first touchdown on their opening drive on the game when Alex Fiero hit Gavin O’Donnell on a 36 yard touchdown pass to give the Jaguars a 7-0 lead. The score remained that way until the fourth quarter when Mitchell Weller scored on a 12 yard touchdown run to cut the margin to 7-6.

Following a fumble by the Jaguars the Bombers took the lead 4 minutes later when Brandon Newman scored on a 5 yard touchdown run to give the Bombers a 12-7 lead. Two missed two point conversion would come back to haunt the Bombers as on both touchdowns scored by Barnum penalties would cost Barnum. They Bombers twice scored on the conversions but two holding penalties cost the Bombers four points and possibly the victory.

The Bombers late in the fourth quarter had the opportunity to seal the win but were unable to pick up a first down and were forced to punt the ball to the Jaguars. Hinckley-Finlayson then marched down the field with 1:48 remaining and with 22 seconds left and the Jaguars facing 3 down and 19 Fiero connected with TJ Johnson at the 10 yard line and Johnson broke two tackles and advanced into the end zone with the game winning touchdown on a 26 yard touchdown reception.

Brandon Newman led the Bombers with 145 yards rushing on 17 carries and Mitchell Weller added 62 yards on 12 carries. Alex Fiero finished 12-22 passing for 161 yards and two touchdowns for Hinckley-Finlayson. TJ Johnson had 6 receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown and he also had 12 carries for 25 yards.

A game which featured good defense by both teams also saw a combined 17 penalties for a combined 165 yards.

The Bombers will look to pick up their first win of the season next week as they will face Mesabi East in Aurora, while the Jaguars who evened their record at 2-2 will host Crosby-Ironton in Hinckley.
