CLOQUET-Sometimes, no matter how hard you work or what scheme you run on a given day, things just don’t quite work out. Saturday was one of those days for the CEC girls hockey team when they run into a buzz saw named Benilde-St. Margaret’s and fell by a score of 5-0 at the Cloquet Area Rec Center.

Although the Jacks were doubled up on the shot clock 12-6 in the first period with the bulk of the 6 shots coming near the end of the period, they were able to keep the game tight. The only score of the first period came at the 9:12 mark when Kaylee Druk scored off a rebound putting the Red Knights up 1-0.

Just nicely into the second period things looked good for CEC when a hooking penalty put the Jacks on the power play. That optimism was short lived however when Kelly Pannek scored a short-handed goal at the 1:13 mark of the period, putting BSM up 2-0. Additional Red Night goals by Jordyn Anne Burns and Caitlin Reilly moved the scoreboard to 4-0, putting the game out of reach.

The only scoring of the third period occurred off a rush from the starting face-off with Anne Arnason scoring just 16 seconds in for BSM, creating what would be the final score of 5-0.

Katie Beckman faced 25 shots, most all of which were high quality offerings and made 20 saves. Freshman Abbey Miller stopped all 19 shots she faced to pick up the shutout in her first varsity start.

The loss puts the Jacks record at 3-3-1 while BSM moves their record to 5-1-1, which includes a 7-2 win a night earlier against the Lightning in Grand Rapids.

CEC will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Hibbing-Chisholm at 7:30 pm at the CARC.
