In the first key Section 7AA matchup of the year the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team dropped a tight 3-2 decision on the road to Grand Rapids/Greenway despite outshooting the lightning 28-17.

CEC outshot the Lightning 9-6 in the opening period, but the only goal of the stanza was a power play goal by Molly Illikainen of GR/GR with Morgan Illikainen assisting.

Callie Halvorson tied the game in the second period at 1-1 and after two periods of play things were still deadlocked.

Another power play goal by Molly Illikainen early in the third period and then a follow-up goal by Morgan Illikainen provided a 3-1 lead for the Lightning before Jessie Ryan cut the gap to 3-2 late in the period.

The Lightning went 2-for-2 on the power play, while CEC did not get an opportunity with a player advantage.

Katie Beckman made 14 saves on 17 shots for CEC, while Sydney Helmbrecht made 26 saves on 28 shots for the Lightning.
