NSO – NEWS RELEASE

On Tuesday the National Soccer Coaches Association of America released its weekly rankings and the Yellowjacket men’s soccer team came in at No. 10 in the North Region. It is the first time this season that the Yellowjackets have jumped into the field.

“We are excited that coaches around the region recognize that we are having a good season so far, but we also know that we have a long way to go and are nowhere near where we need to be,” Yellowjacket Head Coach Joe Mooney said. “Things don’t get any easier for us, that’s for sure. Our schedule this year is really a meat grinder and we will have to keep improving every day if we want to stay in the rankings.”

The next game on the schedule for the Yellowjackets is against the University of St. Thomas on Saturday. The Tommies just happen to hold down the No. 1 spot in the region. In addition to St. Thomas, the Yellowjackets have five other regionally ranked schools – Luther College (No. 3); St. Scholastica (No. 5); UW-Oshkosh (No. 6); Saint John’s (No. 8); and St. Olaf (No. 9) on the schedule in 2014.

“My thinking is that to get better and be a consistent team in these rankings, we need to play the teams that are there,” Mooney said. “The way our schedule rolls out for 2014, we are going to have more than our fair share of chances against some of the best teams in the Upper Midwest. We will learn a lot about ourselves and definitely see where we stack up. I wouldn’t have it any other way and I know my players feel the same. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

The complete NSCAA North Region Poll is available here.

Mooney’s Yellowjackets will play at home on September 13 against the Tommies at 1:00 p.m. The game is currently scheduled for the Yellowjacket Soccer Complex. Stay tuned to www.uwsyellowjackets.com to keep up-to-date on any possible schedule changes.
