The legs of Zach Gerlach provided three touchdowns and the defense of Cloquet provided the power as the Lumberjacks pounded International Falls 45-0 in high school football on Friday night in International Falls.
Gerlach finished with a pair of touchdown runs, a catch for a touchdown and he electrified the crowd with a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half as the Lumberjacks improved to 2-0 in the Sea-Range Conference.
The Jacks wasted little time in taking the lead when Gerlach slashed in from the nine-yard line early in the first quarter and Nick Niemi booted the extra point giving Cloquet a 7-0 edge.  Before the first quarter ended Gerlach hauled in a Nate Weets pass and raced 67 yards to the end zone giving Cloquet a 14-0 lead after the extra point by Niemi.
Second quarter action saw Kyle Klatt bull in from the one-yard line as Cloquet built the lead to 21-0 after Niemi converted the extra point kick.  Cloquet pulled ahead 28-0 before halftime when Gerlach zipped into the end zone after a steller 43-yard run.
Gerlach then ignited the Jacks to start the second half when he weaved through the Bronco defenders with the opening kick of the second half thanks to some nifty blocking by the Jacks kickoff unit making the score 35-0 after Niemi tacked on the extra point kick.
The Lumberjacks then showed their versatility on offense when Niemi knocked home a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter pushing the lead to 38-0.  Cloquet ended the scoring when Christian Pritchet slipped into the end zone at the end of a 13-yard touchdown run making the final 45-0 after Niemi’s extra point kick.
Cloquet is now 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in Sea-Range play, while International Falls drops to 0-2 and 0-1 in conference play.
