Cromwell Topples Mustangs

The Cromwell Cardinals have started their season off right where they wanted to be, 2-0. The Cardinals toppled a tough Kelliher/Northome team at home, 34-14 on Friday night.

Kelliher/Northome kicked off the scoring when Eli Rahier converted a 50 yard run into a TD. Cal Roosdet converted the 2 point conversion to put them up 8-0 early. Cromwell came storming back, when QB Zion Smith connected with Brandon Fairbanks from 22 yards out to cut Kelliher/Northomes lead down to 8-6.

Cromwell would take over the lead in the 1st quarter when Smith complex a 4 yard pass to Austin Pfishner to give them the 14-8 lead going into the 2nd quarter.

In the 2nd quarter, the Cardinals dominated, starting it off with a 4 yard TD run from Carter Karppinen to widen their lead to 20-8. Smith and Pfisthner connected again, this time from 10 yards out.

Smith connected with Eli Warpula to convert the 2 point conversion to widen their lead to 28-8. Smith completed yet another TD pass to another familiar name, hooking up with Fairbanks for their second connection of the game, bringing their lead to 34-8 going into half.

The Cardinals were shutout in the second half, with the only score coming in the 4th quarter when Kelliher/Northome’s Tres Grundmeir rushed into the end zone from 5 yards out to cap the scoring on the night, giving the Cardinals the 34-14 victory.

In the win, Cardinals QB Zion Smith threw 4 touchdown passes, propelling the Cardinals to their 2nd win of the season.

Cromwell (2-0) will host the Carlton Bulldogs (0-2) on September 12th. Kelliher/Northome falls to 1-1 on the season.
