DULUTH- Last season the Barnum Bombers captured their first state girls basketball championship which Katrina Newman played a very important part of the Bombers success over the past five years. Newman has now taken her skills and joined the UMD Bulldogs Women’s Basketball team. In her first Bulldog game she helped contribute in the 67-51 win over Northern Michigan University.


Monday was the season opener at Romano Gymnasium for the Lady Bulldogs and, despite some poor shooting early on, the Bulldogs used strong inside and play and take a 28-23 lead into the locker room at the break. The Bulldogs shot better in the second half and pulled away from the Wildcats for the sixteen point win.


Newman played 18 minutes in her college debut for the Bulldogs, although she didn’t score in the first half she nabbed a few rebounds and played solid defense. Newman scored her first points of her college career with a little under six minutes into in the second half and she seemed to relax as she finished with six points on the night.


Newman was 3-6 from the field for the Bulldogs, for a total of six points. She also pulled down five rebounds and added a steal in the second half. Emma Van Winkle led the Bulldogs in scoring with twelve points on the night. Kellie Rietveld of Northern Michigan led all scorers with 18 points.


The Bulldogs open the season 1-0, and they will be in action this upcoming weekend in Houghton Michigan as the will play in the Michigan Tech Tip-Off Classic. Friday the Bulldogs will face Lake Superior State, and on Saturday they will face the tournament host Huskies of Michigan Tech.
