Sometimes the line between winning and losing a game is very narrow. That was the case on Tuesday night when the Hermantown Hawk’s defeated the Cloquet Lumberjacks 18-7 in a Section 7AAAA game in Hermantown. The Jacks turned the ball over deep in Hawks territory twice resulting in the final two scores of the game for Hermantown and ending the Cloquet season.

Hermantown took little time to score in the first quarter when Jeremy Peterson scampered in for a score from 61-yards out making it 6-0. However, the Lumberjacks stuffed the two-point conversion run of the Hawks and it stood 6-0 for Hermantown.

Cloquet bounced back on the next drive of the game and took a 7-6 lead when Kellin Lamirande weaved his way to the goal line on a 21-yard touchdown run and Trent Moe’s extra point kick gave the Jacks the lead.

The windy, rainy, and snowy weather, contributed to problems for both teams in hanging on to the football. Both teams lost the ball three times, but two of Cloquet’s fumbles ended up coming back to haunt them as the Hawks cashed in for a couple of scores.

A muffed punt helped Hermantown gain the lead back before halftime. The Jacks punter had trouble with the kick and the ball traveled less than 10 yards giving the Hawks a short field to work with. One play later Hermantown scored on seven yard run from Peterson, but again the conversion run was stopped by the Jacks keeping it tight at 12-7 for Hermantown.

The final score of the game took place in the third quarter when the Jacks gave up a ball on a fumble on their own eight-yard line and a couple of plays later it was Peterson checking in with a two-yard touchdown run making it 18-7. Again the Jacks stopped the conversion run.

For the game the Jacks had 203 yards of total offense to 156 yards for the Hawks. Hermantown did not throw a pass in the game, while the Jacks were 5-for-11 in the passing department.

Peterson rushed for 118 yards for Hermantown, while Stephan Pease rushed for 117 yards for the Jacks.

Hermantown now moves on to the Section 7AAAA semi-finals on Saturday when they take on #1 seeded Bemidji on the road.

Hermantown improved 6-3 on the season with the win.
