With a couple of local NSO area athletes leading the way the Bemidji women’s hockey team pulled off the biggest upset in their history on Saturday when they downed #1 ranked Merceyhurst 5-3 in Bemidji.

Former Cloquet-Esko-Carlton hockey players; Sadie Lundquist and Montana Vichorek played instrumental roles in the victory, the first-ever for Bemidji over a top ranked team.

Lundquist notched the first goal of the game at 8:24 of the first period and then assisted on the second goal of the game by Erin Cody in the second period. Lundquist then added another goal at 15:18 of the second period to push the Beaver lead to 3-0.

The game winning goal was scored by Bemidji’s Cody at 19:21 of the second period and Vichorek assisted on that goal.

Lundquist finished with two goals and an assist, but the big story of the game was the work of Bemidji goalie, Alana McElhinney who finished with 56 saves on 58 shots in helping her team pick up the biggest win in program history.

Lundquist, who is from Cloquet, is the daughter of Dan and Kelly Lundquist, while Vichorek is the daughter of Mark and Betty Vichorek of Moose Lake.
