Cloquet-Esko-Carlton swept its way into the second round of the Section 7AA girl’s tennis tournament by shutting out Hermantown 7-0 yesterday afternoon.

Kelsey Collier set the tone at #1 singles in the first match by narrowly defeating D.J. Nelson 6-4, 7-5 in a superbly played match.

Perhaps the match of the day came at #2 singles when Savanna Ellena downed Ashley Lund of Hermantown 6-3, 2-6, 11-9. The tie breaker was a thriller with Ellena managing to scratch and claw her way to a win against the equally tough Lund.

Kristen Chalich had an easier time of things at #3 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 shutout win over the Hawk’s Hannah Peterson, but at #4 singles Lora Chalich had to scrap in order to win a 6-3, 6-4 affair over Elizabeth Carlson.

As good as Ellena’s match was at singles the Jacks got another impressive hard-fought win at #1 doubles when Reilly Kedrowski and Michaela Houser had to come-from-behind to beat Isabelle Dougherty and Joanna Carlson 4-6, 6-2, 10-5. At #2 doubles the CEC team of Asha Fritsinger and Kalie Shevich downed Anna VanDeelen and Maddy Miller 6-1, 6-3 and at #3 doubles it was Steph Campbell and Lizz Jezierski slipping by Andrea Offerson and Brianna Garcia-Meyers 2-6, 6-0, 6-2.

The Lumberjacks will travel to Hibbing today to take on the #1 ranked Hibbing Blue Jackets.
