CLOQUET – Katie Schulz pounded down 12-kills and 8th grade setter, Alex Oakes, provided 30-set assists as Cloquet pounded Ashland 3-1 in volleyball on Thursday night.

Cloquet won the match by scores of; 27-25, 25-13, 23-25 and 25-21, but the biggest sign of things to come came in game one with the Jacks down 21-17. The Lumberjacks found a way to get the ball to Schulz who pounded down three straight kills pulling them back into the game, a game which they eventually won off the service game of Ahnna Peterson. Peterson finished with 11 ace serves for the match, but also finished with a total of 26 points off serve.

Game two saw the Jacks storm out to an early lead and never look back in winning easily. Most of the game saw the Jacks getting tips from Emily Fossen or kills from Maddy Kiehn, Schulz and Abby Parenteau.

Just like it looked when things would be easy the Oredockers bounced back by taking the third game, but Cloquet was able to rebound and make a game of it after struggling early in the game and at one point trailing 13-2 before losing 23-25.

Game four was a game where defense set the tone. Cloquet’s libero, Kierra Johnson, provided some amazing digs in the back row and that seemed to energize the team as they scrambled to find points against the feisty Oredockers.

Schulz finished with 12 kills and 10 digs, Johnson had 14 digs, Kiehn added nine kills and 16 digs, Fossen added 10 kills and Parenteau recorded six kills.

Clare Lulich led the Oredockers with 10 set assists and became the first Ashland player to record 2,000 set assists in a career.
