Esko-Carlton left little doubt that they are a favorite for the sectional soccer tournament when the Eskomos downed Hermantown 8-2 in a high school girls soccer match played on Thursday afternoon.

Caitlyn Lilly gave the Eskomos a 1-0 lead when she scored in the 16th minute on a breakaway, but just 12 minutes later the Hawks answered with a goal by Melissa Madison off a corner kick by Rachael Hoium.

Esko-Carlton took the lead for good in the 34th minute when Savannah Schramm notched a marker off a one-touch shot on a pass by Lilly, and then Lilly converted a goal early in the second half to make it 3-1.

The Hawks fought back to cut the lead to 3-2 in the 50th minute off another Hoium corner kick with a goal scored by Christina Petsoulis, but the Eskomos scored 5 straight goals to win it easily. Hillary Anderson scored the first of the five goals and then it was a rare pure hat trick for Sammy Toivonen followed by a goal by Kate Shelerud to end the scoring.

Lilly scored a pair of goals and added three assists while Toivonen scored three goals.

The Eskomos pounded 23 shots at the Hawks goal, while Rachel Ofstie made five saves on seven shots for E-C.

Both teams will have a quick turnaround and compete again on Friday. Esko-Carlton will travel to Hibbing while the Haws host Park Center in Hermantown.
