Floodwood, Bulldogs Headline Doubleheader

The Carlton Bulldogs, Floodwood Polar Bears, and Cook County Vikings all traveled down to Fridley to get some games in on the diamond.

In the first game of the day, the Bulldogs and Polar Bears faced off at 11am. Fielding woes would hurt the Bulldogs throughout the first game, giving up 5 unearned runs to the Polar Bears.

The winning pitcher for the game was Floodwood’s Kyle Tamminen who pitched 5 innings, allowed zero runs on 4 hits and striked out 4. The offensive side for the Polar Bears was led by Riley Bernsdorf who went 2-4 with 2 triples and a stolen base. Also having a nice offensive performance was Tamminen who went 3-3 with 2 doubles, 3 RBI and one stolen base.

The losing pitcher in the game was Brytton George who pitched 4 innings, giving up 6 earned runs on 14 hits and striking out one. On the offensive for the Bulldogs, George would go 1 for 2, along with Sam Macor, Mike Moralez, and Trevor Nelson.

In the second game for the Polar Bears, they would top the Cook County Vikings 9-4 to secure their second win on the trip.

In the final game of the evening, the Bulldogs battled with the Cook County Vikings. Cook County jumped out to the early 5-0 lead before the Bulldogs answered back with 3 runs of their own in the 3rd inning. The Vikings snagged 2 of those back in the bottom of the 3rd however, giving them the 7-3 lead. The Bulldogs would continue to battle back, grabbing one run back in the 5th and going for a 4 run rallying in the top of the 6th inning to give them the 8-7 lead. Timely hitting for the Vikings however would give them 2 runs in the top of the 7th inning to secure the 9-8 victory.

Cook County’s Rory Bakke and Carlton’s Evan Gray would both get no decisions in the game. Frankie Miller got the win for the Vikings in relief, pitching 2 innings, giving up 3 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 2. Joe Borud led the offense going 4 for 4 with 3 stolen bases and 4 RBIs, including the game winning hit in the top of the 7th.

Taking the loss for the Bulldogs was Dominic Bennett, pitching 2 innings, allowing 2 hits, 2 earned runs and grabbing 2 strikeouts. The offense was led by Mike Moralez who went 2 for 2, stole 3 bases, drove in 3 and showed some patience at the plate drawing 2 walks. Dominic Bennett and Evan Gray also had a nice days at the plate. Bennett went 2 for 4 and scored 2 runs and Gray went 2 for 3 and drove in one.

The Bulldogs fall to 0-2 to begin the young season, but will look to bounce back on Tuesday, April 29th  when they travel to play the McGregor Mercuries. The Bulldogs also play next Thursday, May 1st against the Wrenshall Wrens. The Polar Bears improve to 2-1 and look to play the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers on Monday, April 28th.
