Sophomore quarterback Drew Bauer and his Maroon mates scored on both their first and final plays of the night and walked out of James S. Malosky Stadium with a 17-14 comeback victory over the Whites in the University of Minnesota Duluth’s annual spring intrasquad game Friday.

Bauer hooked up with freshman running back Nick Larson on a 10-yard touchdown pass with 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to cap off a 14-play, 80-yard scoring drive. Bauer had given the Maroons a 7-0 lead 3:09 into the first quarter when he took his team’s opening snap and darted 63 yards around left end and into the end zone. Sophomore placekicker Tyler McLauglin’s 25-yard field goal early in the second quarter put the Maroons up 10-0 before sophomore running back Beau Bofferding got the Whites on the board with a nifty 50-yard touchdown run at 6:12 of the third quarter. Third-year sophomore quarterback Justin Laureys then gave the Whites their only lead of the night with 1:40 to go in that same quarter by threading a 35-yard strike to senior wide out Aaron Roth.

Bauer, who started all 13 games last fall, connected on 10 of 23 passes for 113, but was picked off twice (once each by junior defensive back Darion Fletcher and freshman linebacker Zach Bassuener). He also paced the Maroons in rushing with 56 yards on six carries. Laureys, who has yet to attempt a pass as a collegian and was the Bulldogs’ No. 4 quarterback in 2013, was 9-of-15 for 105 yards on the night.

The 40th annual Maroon-White Game, played before a crowd of 1,071, closed out spring practice drills for the Bulldogs.
