Winning games is always the goal going into any game, but when you are a young team getting better is the first step in that direction. That step appeared to be what was happening with the Cloquet girls soccer team on Saturday, losing to a very good Academy of Holy Angels team 1-0.

Shannon McQuillon scored for the Stars at 26:02 of the first period, with the assist going to Shannon Wynne putting her team up 1-0. That goal turned out to be the game winning goal and the only scoring of the contest.

“We played much better today, especially in the second half. Our passing was sharp and we went hard to the ball.” Cloquet Head Coach Dustin Randall commented to NSO after the game.

Randall also had high praise for his backup goalkeeper, Kenzie Rathe, who made an eye-popping 17 saves. “Our goalie played very well and kept us in it, especially early when she stopped a penalty kick.”

Although Cloquet hasn’t won a game yet, the level of competition they have faced so far hasn’t made the goal of winning any easier. “I don’t like to keep saying we are coming close, but I believe we are making good progress. Today we lost to a very good twin cities team and two of our other losses were to AA schools (Rosemount and Central-Denfeld). The one game that counts was against Esko-Carlton and, although we lost, we were right there at the end,” stated Randall

The Lady Jacks will get another bite at the apple to try for their first win on Thursday when they travel to Hermantown to take on the Hawks in an important Lake Superior Conference matchup.
