At times it must have felt like the Mesabi East Giants were in the middle of Hurricane Earl during their Thursday night football game against Moose Lake-Willow River. The Rebels pounded out 10-touchdowns much like the anticipation of Earl on the east coast later today and over the weekend as ML-WR stormed to a 75-0 victory at home in Willow River.

After the Rebels stopped the Giants on their first drive they took over and score on a Holden Olson 6-yard touchdown run just 3:48 into the game. Olson’ touchdown was followed by three more touchdowns in the first quarter by Chris Gassert, Cody Schmidt and Jake Disterhaupt to make it 27-0 after the opening stanza. Mike Bennett tacked on the extra point kick after three of the four touchdowns.

The Rebels added four more touchdowns in the second quarter to go up 54-0 at halftime. Disterhaupt romped 59-yards for a score, Nathan Vanzee caught a pass from Nick Tokar and raced 70-yards for a touchdown, Josh Cisar scampered 60-yards for a score and then Vanzee returned a punt 75-yards for a score. Bennett added the extra point kick on three more of the scores in the second quarter.

ML-WR added a Gassert one-yard run, a Tyler Cisar 5-yard run and a B.J. Young 10-yard rumble, all in the third quarter to wrap up the scoring.

In all the Rebels rushed for 420-yards in a game that saw them take their starting offensive players out after one drive of the third quarter.
