Cloquet started a bit slow in their volleyball match with Barnum on Thursday night at Cloquet High School, but once the Jacks found their stride they pulled away for a convincing 25-17, 25-9 and 25-21 victory over the Bombers.

Barnum took a 5-3 lead over the Jacks in the first game and they appeared to be controlling the game, but after a side out for a point on a tip at the net and then three straight service points from Abbi Parenteau, the Jacks began a slow dissection of the Bombers.

Perhaps the biggest turning point came when Cloquet’s libero, Kierra Johnson, recorded five straight service points including a couple of aces that seemed to spark her team to the win in game one.

The Lumberjacks struggled early finding an answer to the hard-hitting Jessica Newman and the crafty Allainie Hanek-Siltanen, but eventually they did as Cloquet controlled the net with strong play from Maddie Kiehn, Parenteau and Emily Fossen.

In game two the wheels came off the proverbial wagon for the Bombers early on in the game. With the score even at 2-2 the Jacks won a point on a side out, and then record two more points on the serve of Jenna Anderson. After a Bomber side out for point, the Jacks roared back with a side out of their own for a point, and then five more points off the strong service game of Katie Schulz. In all the Jacks recorded 11 of 13 points after the score was tied at 2-2.

Schulz got the Lumberjack offense going again in game three with a thundering serve that stymied the ability of the Bombers to get into their offensive sets and after a 13-4 run in the middle of the game the Jacks had pulled far enough ahead to hang on for the final game victory.

Newman led the Bombers with 8-kills and 12-digs, Karianna Duesler finished with 15-set assists and Hanek-Siltanen recorded 6-kills and 8-digs.

Kiehn pounded down 13-kills for the Jacks, while Parenteau added 8 and Emily Fossen 7-kills. Eighth grade setter Alex Oakes had 31-set assists to lead the offense and she also finished with 5-digs.
