Hawks move to Championship Game

Kerry Rodd – NSO

There is an old saying that the only things certain in life are death and taxes.  The Hermantown boys hockey team is trying to add another part to that saying and that is an annual visit to the State Class A Championship game for the Hawks.  The Hawks nailed down their fifth straight trip the the title tilt by beating first time state entrant New Prague 4-2 on Friday afternoon.

Through two periods the Hawks were up 2-0 by virtue of a lone goal by Ryan Carlson in the first period, and another goal in the second period by Kori Ochs just 56 seconds into the period.

Hermantown went up 3-0 in the final period when Scott Wasbotten scored from Nate Pionk and Ryan Kero just 1:17 into the final stanza.  However, the Trojans cut the lead to 3-1 at 6:32 on a power play goal from Austin Isaacson that made things interesting. Wasbotten added an empty net goal at 15:38, but the Trojans again struck back late in the period, but it proved to be too little and too late for New Prague.

The win puts the Hawks in the championship game on Saturday against East Grand Forks.
