SUPERIOR, WI – After a week off for the Head of the Lakes fair the racers and fans were ready for a good night of racing at the Superior Speedway and that is what they got on Friday night. The night was sponsored by Kimmes Tire and Oil and Whelen Engineering.

In the Late models Eric Breeschoten from Buffalo made his first appearance of the 2010 racing season and he came out to win the first heat in the division. He was followed by Adam Hensel and Gregg Hill who had a nice run came in third. In the second heat it was the familiar eleven car of Pat Doar who took the checkered flag for his fourth heat win of the season. Harry Hanson from Eveleth came across the line next and then Darrell Nelson. And in the third heat Todd Gehl from Solon Springs won his first heat race of the season followed by Aaron Lillo and Joey Ogston. In the late model feature it was all Doar as he started on the inside of the second row and was in the lead after turns one and two and never looked back and by the halfway point of the race he already had and full straight away lead over Gehl and Doar was getting faster as the race continued and was weaving through lap traffic into Twin Ports NAPA Auto Care Center victory lane for the second time in 2010. Doar was followed by Gehl, Hill, Lillo, Hensel and Nelson.

The Pure Stocks were the featured class of the night as all the drivers were brought up on stage and introduced out of their cars before the feature race. At the start of the feature the front rows of cars were four wide coming past the front grandstands and after the first lap it was Al Rapp who was in the lead. There was a back and forth battle between Rapp and Richard Dzelak Jr. with each driver taking the lead from each other and finally it was Dzelak who finally got in front of Rapp on lap 10. Dzelak would hold everyone off to win his third feature of the season. Rapp finished in second followed by Dustin Follett who started in the 8th row, Matt Madsen was next and Dan Larsen rounding out the top five. Earlier in the night in the heat races it was Pat Van Ert who won his 4th heat of the season in the first heat followed by Madsen and Larsen. In the second heat of six laps it was Rapp winning his first heat race of the season with Justin Madsen crossing the line next and then Caitlyn Carlson. And in the third and final heat it was Rick Cornelison winning followed by Steve Udeen and Dzelak.

In the Modified feature it was Rick Rivord who jumped out the early lead and was out front until the 13th lap when Ryan Aho got around him on the front stretch but on the next lap a caution came out after Darrell Nelson spun out between turns 3 and 4. On the re-start Kelly Estey took advantage and beat Rivord to the bottom of turn one and took over second and then he caught Aho and passed him on the high side of turns 1 and 2 and went on to win his first feature of 2010. Aho finished second followed by Rivord, Al Uotinen and Jody Bellefeuille. In the heat races earlier it was Bryan Hessler from Chetek making his first appearance of the season count as he won the first heat followed by Nelson and Nick Lavato. And in the second heat it was just the opposite of the feature with Aho winning followed by Estey and Bellefeuille finishing third.

In the Super Stocks it was a battle from the drop of the green flag as Mike Bellefeuille, Tom Treviranus and Willie Johnson went three wide down the front stretch but it was Bellefeuille who came out of the first turns in the lead. Bellefeuille remained the leader though battling hard with Scott Lawrence until Lawrence overtook him for the lead on lap 8. Bellefeuille would take the lead back but then a caution came out when Treviranus spun out stopping the race.

On the re-start it was Lawrence who took advantage and re-captured the lead from Bellefeuille. On a caution on the next lap that was caused by Keith Kern spinning out Robbie Cooper trying to avoid a collision hit a rut and rolled his car in turn 4. He was alright but his car was loaded on a tow truck and hauled to the pits. On the re-start this time it was Mike Weber that took advantage and took a run at Lawrence and the two went side by side down both the front and back stretch for two laps until Weber finally got the lead with one lap to go and held off Lawrence to win his third feature of the season. Lawrence finished second followed by Bellefeuille, Dave Flynn and Joe Olson. In the heat races earlier it was Bellefeuille winning the first heat followed by Weber and Oliver. In the second heat it was Willie Johnson Jr. winning his first heat race, Jim Campbell was next and then Treviranus.

Like the late model feature there wasn’t a whole lot to talk about except about the great run of Scott Herrick who captured the lead on the third lap and never looked back at the rest of the pack. Herrick cruised to win his second feature win of the season. Herrick was followed in the feature by Skeeter Estey, Taylor Leuthner, Cody Wolkowski and E.J. Hietala. In the heat races earlier in the night it was Adam Archer picking up his first heat win of the season in heat race one. Shawn Rivord finished second and Wolkowski in third. In the second heat it was Estey winning his second heat race of the season followed by Deven Van House and Hietala. And in the third heat it was Herrick followed by Jesse Ogston and Dan Kingsley.
