Paul Nisius, the head coach of the Yellowjacket cross country and track and field teams, has resigned his position at UW-Superior to accept the head men’s track and field coach position at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Nisius’ final day at UW-Superior will be Friday, August 13.

Nisius spent the last seven years coaching the Yellowjacket runners, helping 18 runners receiving NCAA qualifying marks. His runners have set 42 records during the indoor track and field season and 34 more during the outdoor season. Five times his athletes have reached All-American status.

“On behalf of the university and our athletic department, I would like to thank Paul for everything he has done at UW-Superior. He has worked tirelessly and done a great job in taking our running program to a new level, leaving a nice core for the coach that will come in to replace him,” said UW-Superior Athletic Director Steve Nelson. “This is a great opportunity for Paul to return to his alma mater and move up to the Division II level, taking on a new set of challenges as a coach. We wish him nothing but the best with his move to UMD and again thank him for everything he has done for UW-Superior.”

A 1986 graduate of Duluth Central High School, Nisius was a four-year standout for the Bulldogs from 1986-90, captaining the cross country and track teams in 1989-90. He was a 1988 NSIC all-conference selection and five time conference track champion (1,500 meter indoors and outdoors in 1988 and 1989 and 1,000 meter indoors in 1988).

A search for Nisius’ replacement is underway.
