Hermantown Wins Virginia Invite

The Hermantown Hawks golf team won the Virginia Invitational on Saturday at the Wilderness Golf Course in Tower, Minnesota. Hermantown bested eleven other schools, including two from Ontario, Canada.


Hermantown finished with four golfers in the top six and five in the top twelve to capture first place in the meet. The Hawks also set a meet record with lowest team total for the tournament. Hermantown’s team total of 291 was two strokes better than the previous meet record set by Virginia in 2007.


Hermantown senior Andrew Oakes shot a 3-under 67 to capture medalist honors. He beat Alex McDonald of Fort Frances, Ontario, who shot a 70. Anton Skerjance of Eveleth-Gilbert finished in third place with a 73. Tom Caox from Hermantown and Joel Pettingill of Superior both shot 74 to tie for fourth overall.


The rest of the top twelve were Andrew Krasaway and Zach Edgerton, both of Hermantown, and Glenn Walls from International Falls.
All boys tied for fifth with a 75. Rob Kraft of Superior, Olak Walkky from Virginia, and Dakota Lundstrom from Virginia all shot 76 on the afternoon. Taylor Sundbom from Hermantown finished with a 77.


Hermantown won the team title by shooting a record setting 291. Virginia finished in second with a score of 309. International Falls placed third by shooting 314, the Golden Bears of Eveleth-Gilbert finished fourth with 320, and fifth place went to Fort Frances of Ontario, Canada with a 320.


Rounding out the rest of the team totals were Superior sixth with a 328, seventh place was Dryden from Ontario, Canada with a 334, Grand Rapids shot a 337 to finish eighth, ninth place was BEST with a 344. Mesabi East, Greenway, and Hibbing rounded out the rest of the teams.
