DULUTH – Good pitching and timely hitting are two of the most important things in baseball. The Esko Eskomos used both to pick up the 7-3 road win against Duluth Denfeld at Wade Stadium Monday evening.

Richard Jubie pitched a complete game-scattering nine hits while offensively, the Eskomos scored the first six of their seven runs with two outs to overcome a shaky start and pick up the non-conference win. “Timely hitting is key and we were able to do that tonight,” Esko head coach Ben Haugen commented after the game.

The Eskomos started the contest by drawing a leadoff walk only to see their first inning chances squashed when, with one out, they tried to score from third on an infield hit and were thrown out at the plate. The Hunters were able to get on the scoreboard first, starting the game with a leadoff hit. An overthrow to first allowed Denfeld to score and take a 1-0 lead after one.

Denfeld continued their offensive assault in the second inning, scoring on a base hit to center. They were able to get another run across and take a 3-0 lead when, with runners on the corners, the Hunters executed a rundown at first-steal home play to perfection.

By the third inning Jubie started to find his groove, shutting the Hunters down for the remainder of the game. Jubie struck out five while walking three in the complete game win. “Our guy [Jubie] pitched a whale of a game for us tonight,” mentioned Haugen.

The Eskomos had a chance to get on the board in the fourth, but once again their base runner was gunned down at the plate while trying to score from second on a base hit to center with one out.

The solution Esko came up with to blow the game open in the fifth inning was to score their runs with two outs. With the bases loaded, Cody Townsend ripped a hit to the gap in left center to bring in two runs. Sam Nigon drew a walk to load the bases, again setting the table for John Green. Green hit a rocket past the first baseman to score two more runs and give Esko their first lead of the game at 4-3 after 5 innings.

The Eskomos picked up where they left off in the sixth when Max Reinertson led off with a bloop single. Then, once again with two outs, Adam Deveau hit a double to score Reinertson. Tim Balow followed up with a hit to score Daveau.

Esko added an insurance run in the seventh when Green scored on a single by Reinertson giving Esko their final 7-3 margin.

The Eskomos were led by Daveau, who was 3-5 at the plate while scoring two runs.

Esko will have a quick turnaround when they host Cromwell on Tuesday. Denfeld will be back in action on Thursday when they host Hermantown at Wade Stadium.
