Recently the 7th and 8th graders at AlBrook added “Thursday Math,” and an extra hour a week of math review. Students who scored higher than 655 or 755 on their MCA math tests last year did not need to have this extra math time.

Instead, they gathered on Thursdays with Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Neuman to develop their own project. The group decided to open an after school food store to feed the hungry students who stay after for sports practices and academic programs. They voted on the name “Hunger B Gone” and are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:10-3:45.

Their menu includes Domino’s pizza, Lunchables, Uncrustables, fruit, beef and cheese sticks, Go-Gurts, and fruit snacks. The group calculated their costs per item, their selling prices, and their profits. Three to four students stay after school each day to run the store.

At the end of each day, the workers count the inventory and the money as well as make a shopping list. The group usually pulls in over $100 per day, making a nice profit of about $40. This money will be split between the grades and deposited in their activity accounts, which will move with them as they get older. Hunger B Gone at AlBrook High School is a huge success!
