It might be a case of good news, bad news for the Esko girls basketball team following an incredible performance in the Section 7AA basketball tournament on Tuesday night. The Eskomos throttled Deer River 75-38, but now they must face #1 seeded Braham, a team which beat Esko just a month ago.

The normal march through any type of tournament format suggests that the games get tougher the deeper you go into the tournament. However, the Eskomos have gotten stronger and played better basketball as the tournament has worn on and that could be important come Thursday night when they play Braham.

It was about as complete a team effort as you could have in the semifinals for the Eskomos. Ten different players scored, the defense was intense with an “in your face” attitude and the Warriors play at the post was all but nullified by Savannah Trapp.

Esko built a 39-25 halftime lead and then turned things up in the second half by outscoring the Warriors 36-13 in the second half.

Trapp and Amanda Bergstedt led the Eskomos with 15 points each, Keely Deadrick finished with 13, it was eight for Lydia Pelletier, Megan Reuer and Alyson Glumac each scored six points, Katie Tonner dumped in five, it was three points for Julianne Carley, while Danielle Salo and Kate Marquis each finished with a pair of points.

“We did a great job of taking care of the ball,” said Esko coach Scott Antonutti. “It is hard to pinpoint who had a great game because everyone played so well.”

The Warriors did not have a player in double figures in the game. Kari DeYoung and Theresa Gotchie led Deer River with nine points apiece.

Esko and Braham will meet for the sectional title on Thursday night at UMD in a rematch of a game that was played on February 18th when the Bombers defeated the Eskomos 81-58.
