CEC Captures Third in Coon Rapids Tourney

Kailey Buhr scored twice for the Lady Lumberjacks as they finished in third place at the Coon Rapids Holiday Tournament Saturday afternoon in the Twin Cities.

The Lumberjacks Buhr put Cloquet-Esko-Carlton in front 1-0 at 4:01 of the first period when she took a pass from Ashley Krisak and beat Owatonna net minder Jessica Cole to put the Jacks in front 1-0.

Makayla Langenbrunner made it 2-0 a little over ten minutes later when she scored on an assist from Rachel McCauley. The first period ended with the Jacks in front 2-0.

The Huskies cut the Lumberjacks lead to 2-1 in the second period when Abby Sawyer scored for Owatonna. The Huskies tied the contest at the 14:25 mark of the third period when Margo Achterkich scored to make it 2-2 with a little over two and a half minutes to play.

With the game tied it was Buhr once again coming up big, this time Kaitlyn Miller set up Buhr with the game winning goal at the 15:34 mark of the third period. Mikayla Baker scored an empty net goal with 5 seconds remaining to seal the Lumberjacks victory.

Stacey Nelson picked up the win for Cloquet-Esko-Carlton as she stopped 20 of 22 shots she faced. Jessica Cole stopped 16- of the 19 shots she faced in the loss.

The Lumberjacks improve to 4-8-2 overall on the season and they will host the Duluth Northern Stars next Saturday at Northwoods Credit Union Arena.

The Northern Stars won the Consolation title of the Coon Rapids tournament, and it was Eastview knocking off Totino Grace for the Championship by a score of 5-2.
