The Cloquet Lady Lumberjacks picked up a big section win at home Tuesday night by defeating the Duluth Central Trojans 48-37. The Lumberjacks, still fighting for better seed in the section, picked up the second win of the season over Central.

Cloquet came out in the first half and battled Duluth Central, taking a five point 23-18 lead at halftime. Cloquet was then plagued with poor shooting from the field. In the first half, Cloquet could only muster a 24% shooting percentage from the floor.

“We had great looks and great shots,” head coach Jeff Ojanen told Northland Sports Online. “They packed it in tight with their zone but we just couldn’t hit a shot. Annabel (Morrisroe) did a good job inside scoring 24 points and she had 15 rebounds.” Ojanen was quick to add that “Katie Pappas had a great game defensively shutting down their top scorer, holding her to 5 points all night. Thi was amazing considering she was averaging over 20 in her last several games.”

The Lumberjacks continued with poor shooting in the second half, but still managed to come away with the win at home. Cloquet out rebounded the Trojans 55-38 and did a better job on the turnover front, committing five less turnovers then Duluth Central.

The Lumberjacks were led by Morrisroe and her 24 points, Katie Pappas added 9 points, Brianna Henagin finished with 7, and Carri Zeadow ended with 4 points. Mary Keller and Krista Schmitz each had 2 in the win. Sami Vezina led the Trojans with 20 points, Mary Von Rueden added 7 points and Jill Nelson chipped in with 5.

The Lumberjacks are at home Thursday night when they host Superior. Cloquet improves to 9-12 on the season. The Trojans fall to 4-17 overall and host Duluth Denfeld on Thursday night at home.
