Hawks top Hunters in Season Opener for both Teams

Hawks Stop Hunters

Kole Zuidmulder scored 20 points for the Hermantown Hawks, as the Hawks came from one point down at halftime to pick up and 11 point 55-44 win at home Tuesday night over Duluth Denfeld.

Denfeld and Hermantown, who played a tight contest in the first half, saw the Hunters take a one point 25-24 lead at the break.

Hermantown however was not going to go down on 1st year head coach Joe Schmitz’s first varsity game as the Hawks came from behind for the victory outscoring the Hunters 31-19 in the second half.

Zuidmulder finished with 20 points leading the way, but then it was a balanced scoring attack with Justin Brendon scoring 8 points, Xavier Gow and Thomas Madison each added 7, Chase Hren pitched in with 6 and it was Zach Brendon adding 4 points for the Hawks.

The Hunters were led by Jack Monson who finished with 9, Beyer Kucharski and Sjen Randa each added 8, Marques Jones and Kjell Randa both finished with 6, Spencer Wallner added 5 and Conner Behm finished with 2 points in the loss.

The Hawks start the season 1-0 and they will face the Eskomos next Monday night in Esko. Denfeld will next play next Tuesday night when they will open their home season with the Superior Spartans coming to Denfeld High School.
