A furious come back in the third period by the Cloquet-Esko-Carlton girls hockey team came up just short as the Jacks fell 4-3 to Grand Rapids/Greenway on Tuesday night in a game played at the Pine Valley Ice Shelter in Cloquet.

The Lightning rode the hot hand of Hannah Schmoll early in the game as Schmoll scored the games first three goals, including two in the first period to give GR/G a 2-0 lead.

At 4:59 of the second period Schmoll added her third goal of the game to push the lead to 3-0 before CEC cut the lead to 3-1 on a goal by Ashley Krisak at 9:15.  Before the second period ended the Lightning pushed the lead to 4-1 at 14:18 on a Megan Dulong score and CEC trailed by three entering the final period.

Things changed noticeably at the beginning of the third period as the Jacks came out flying and attacking from the get-go.  Eventually their tenacity paid off when the Lightning took a penalty and CEC converted the man advantage into a goal when Cassie Inman threaded the needle from the left point to make it 4-2 at the 7:31 mark.  Assisting on the goal were Rachel Macaulay and Kayla Baker.

CEC made things a whole lot more interesting at 9:58 when they scored seven seconds into another power play which occurred when the Lightning were caught with too many players on the ice.  Baker won a draw back to Jade Alvillar who danced into the high slot and ripped a shot passed Shannon Hart to make the score 4-3.

For the game both teams put 30 shots on net with CEC goalie Stacy Nelson finishing with 26 saves and Hart finishing with 27 saves for the Lightning.

CEC drops to 0-5-1 on the season.
