DULUTH, Minn.  The St. Scholastic men’s hockey team finished off a weekend sweep of Finlandia University (Mich.) Saturday behind two goals from Brandon Nowakowski defeating the Lions 4-1 at Mars Lakeview Arena.

The scoring got started almost immediately in the first period with B. Nowakowski taking a pass from younger brother Dylan Nowakowski  and putting it past the Finlandia goalie to put the Saints up 1-0 just 29 seconds into the contest.  Paul Marcoux  also got credit for an assist on the play.

The Lions would have a quick answer, however, with Jared Vincek scoring at the 4:45 mark in the period with an assist by Travis Armstrong to tie the game up at 1-1.

It was all CSS after that point with the Saints scoring two second period goals just 14 seconds apart from one another. Nowakowski accounted for the first goal assisted by Brandon Parrone ) at the 7:07 mark, and at the 6:53 mark Chad Golanowski found the back of the net to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Saints. Ryne Bodger  and Matt Malenstyn both tallied assists on the Golanowski goal.

Midway through the third period D. Nowakowski would notch his fifth goal of the season with assists by brother Brandon and Marcoux to put the final score at 4-1 Saints.

Much like Friday night, the Saints outshot the Lions totaling 45 shots on goal to Finlandia’s 20.

With two goals and an assist Saturday, B. Nowakowski increased his point total on the season to 11 in six games, which is currently first in the NCHA.

Tyler Bruggeman  made 19 saves to earn his second win in as many nights. Troy Chandler had 41 saves in the loss for the Lions (0-6-0, 0-4-0 NCHA).

The Saints (4-0-2, 4-0-2 NCHA) will next play this coming Friday when they travel to play the University of Wisconsin-Stout in Menomonie Wis. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
