Through one period of play, Cloquet-Esko-Carlton had allowed only one Cambridge-Isanti shot on goalie Sarah Gustafson. The Lumberjacks thoroughly dominated play throughout Friday night’s match up with the Blue Jackets as CEC rolled to a 4-0 victory.

Elizabeth Hafner, goalie for the Blue Jackets, kept her team in the game by allowing only a Kelly Carlson goal in the first period and a Carley Esse goal in the second period. Yet, at no time did it seem that C-I would ever be able to sustain enough offense to get back in the game. Carlson’s goal was a picture perfect play by a line that includes Dalyce Gustafson and Emily Gustafson. Emily took a feed from Dalyce behind the net and fed Carlson on the top edge of the crease for a stuff shot and a 1-0 lead. Esse’s goal was a rocket from the right point on a pass from her sister Courtney Esse, and Jessie Ryan also notched an assist on the play.

Callie Halvorson ended the scoring for the Jacks with a pair of third period goals. Halvorson’s first goal came at 2:41 when she stole a puck in the Blue Jackets zone and beat Hafner up high, and her final goal came at 7:56 from hard work by her linemates Courtney Esse and Melissa Clark.

Not only did the Jacks outshoot C-I 49-12, but they also hit numerous posts including Courtney Esse’s shot that hit the left pipe and cross bar in a double ringer during the third period.

The Lumberjacks fore-check was so intense that they held the puck inside the Blue Jackets zone for nearly a five minute stretch in the second period with the Blue Jackets unable to do anything other than hope that Hafner could save the day. In the end, Hafner did her part, but the rest of the team was unable to mount any serious threat.

Gustafson played through two periods and ended with nine saves and Nicole Lund played the final period for the Jacks and finished with three saves.

The win improves the Jacks to 10-7-3 and they will play at home tonight against #10 ranked in Class AA White Bear Lake at the Cloquet Area Recreation Center.
