HARTMARK, BOMAN WIN AT PUMPKIN RUN

CLOQUET, MN—A record field of 326 registered runners and walkers participated in the eighth annual Pumpkin Run and Walk Five Kilometer Race held at Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College in Cloquet on Saturday, October 19. The race featured two returning champions and produced nine age-group records on a fast morning for running.

Three-time former Pumpkin Run champion and course record holder Eric Hartmark of Duluth led all runners to the finish in a time of 16:06. Hartmark also won the race in 2009, 2010 and 2011, setting the Pumpkin Run course record of 15:13 in 2009. Two-time Pumpkin Run champion and 2012 winner Sean Gaskell of Duluth was second overall, setting a new 20-29 age-group record of 17:04 in the process. Adam Doe of Fridley was third in 17:37.

“It really was a great morning for running and walking,” said Tom Urbanski, FDLTCC director of public information and who also serves as race director. “We were a bit nervous at 6:00 a.m. when it was raining and then snowing as we started setting up the course and putting out the cones, but the rain stopped, the sun came out, and there was no wind. We saw a lot of smiles and people were having fun on the course and during the post-race awards and prize drawings.”

Many of the race participants helped celebrate the theme and season of the Pumpkin Run event by wearing costumes or orange and black clothing. Among those receiving prizes in the costume division were the Duck Dynasty crew, two little jailbirds, Three Blind Mice, Eric Hartmark in a ghoulish Spiderman outfit, and Cookie Monster and Cookie Jar.

Another Pumpkin Run tradition is awarding medals to the fastest Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College students  in the race. This year, Marcus Taylor-Loyd won the men’s division in 23:26 and Jade Alvillar won the women’s division in 25:51.

The race course started on campus and then followed 14th Street going south to the Valley View neighborhood and then turned around on Harner Lane and returned along 14th Street to the campus. The race was professionally timed by Gopher State Events using RFID electronic chip timing attached to each participant’s race number bib.

Local businesses helped sponsor the race through prize and refreshment donations, including Super One Foods, WalMart, Duluth Running Company, Tortoise & Hare Footwear, Culligan Water, Austin Jarrow, Grandma’s Marathon, Mellin Promotional Advertising, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Erbert & Gerbert’s, UCare, Simek’s Farm, Great Harvest Bakery and Fond du Lac Tribal and Community College.
