Looking toward the sky, it appeared the weather would clear up for the start of Tuesday’s Section 7A semi-final girls soccer matchup between the Esko-Carlton Eskomos and Duluth Denfeld. However, the crowd was misled as the game started amidst a downpour. The weather didn’t dampen the Eskomos desirefor victory, however, as they went on to beat the Hunters 2-0 on a rain soaked field in Esko.

In a tightly contested first half where both teams had their chances, Esko-Carlton came away with the lone goal of the half. The Eskomos scored when Tess Mattson jumped on a ball that was bouncing around in front of the Denfeld net coming off of a Kate Marquis corner kick in the 24th minute.

Amanda Bergstedt gave the Eskomos a little breathing room when she scored six minutes into the second half with Marquis picking up her second point of the game with the assist.

Emily Johnson recorded five saves on the night, while picking up her second shutout of the playoffs. Sarah Fleissner tallied 13 saves for the Hunters. Denfeld closes out the 2009 campaign with a very respectable 14-6-1 record.

In a much anticipated matchup, Esko-Carlton advances to face Cloquet in the Section 7A finals with a trip to the state tournament on the line. Because both teams are from the North, the game, originally scheduled to take place in Chicago Lakes, will be played at 5:00pm on Thursday at Public Schools Stadium in Duluth.
