Lady Rebels Move To 2-0 On The Season

WILLOW RIVER- Friday night saw the Moose Lake-Willow River Rebels girls basketball team move to 2-0 on the season as the Rebels knocked off the Proctor Rails by a score of 62-41 at Willow River High School.


First year head coach Joe Adamczak told Northland Sports Online “We have a good core of players returning this season; and we want to use our quickness and speed to our advantage which is what we did tonight.”


The Rebels used a pressure defense that forced the Rails into 36 turnovers on the night which helped the Rebels to the 21 point victory. The Rebels jumped out in front as they built up a 31-14 halftime lead, and again scored 31 more points in the second half to pick up the victory. The Rails cut the Rebels lead down to 12 in the second, half but could get no closer than 50-38.


Adri Jusczak scored 12 first half points on the way to her game high 17, which led all scorers Friday night. Jusczak also pulled down 16 rebounds in the Rebels victory. Taylor Mille chipped in with 15 points Friday night, including three 3-pointers that she connected on.


Rounding out the Rebels scoring was Shaelyn Halverson with 9 points; Hayley Johnson scored 7 points, while Holly Mattison and Jodi Michalski both scored 4 points, and it was Ava Szczyrbak, Dana Olson, and Kayla Radel all adding 2 points in the Rebels win.


The Rails were led Krista Mottonen who scored 13 points, Brianna Westendorf added 11 points including nine of them from the free throw line. Bridget Tesser score 10 points, Emily Fremling, Lindsey Ziells, and Lexie DeWall all scored 2 points and it was Cecilia Everson adding 1 point in the Rails loss.


The Rebels move to 2-0 on the season and they are in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Aitkin to take on the Gobblers. The Rails fall to 0-2 on the season and they are also in action again on Tuesday night when they will host Two Harbors.
