Sophomore guard Alyssa Kerkhoff led the way for the University of Minnesota Duluth (3-1) Tuesday evening, scoring 21 points in a 77-65 Bulldog victory over the University of Wisconsin Superior (2-1) in the latest edition of the notorious Border Battle.

UMD struggled to click on both sides of the ball in the early going, giving up several easy baskets and struggling to manage the Yellow Jacket press defense. In a first half dominated by turnovers, UMD eventually recovered to build a 40-32 lead at the break, thanks in large part to a definitive advantage on the glass.

UMD’s presence down low persisted in the final 20 minutes, as they accrued as many offensive rebounds as UWS had total rebounds. Further exploiting the Bulldog height advantage, junior forward Katrina Newman added 14 points and eight rebounds and freshman forward Taylor Meyer put in 12 points of her own, also grabbing eight boards.

Tuesday’s game gives the Bulldogs a 21-4 advantage in the all-time Border Battle series. UMD will get an extended break over the Thanksgiving holiday before hitting the road for clash against St. Cloud State on Dec. 1 to kick off the 22-game Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference schedule.
