Basketball season kicked off in the Northland on Saturday with Esko hosting a girls basketball Jamboree. Eight area teams competed in four 18 minute single period games to brush up on their skills with the regular season just around the corner.

In a time shortened game which featured as much intensity as a contest deep in the playoffs, the Eskomos beat Mountain Iron-Buhl but a score of 24-21 to wrap up the night of basketball. Esko was led by UCLA recruit Savannah Trapp with 10 points. Claudia Turner also added seven points for the Eskomos. Junior guard Sarah Overbye led the Rangers with 11 points. Both teams expect to compete for section titles in Section 7A and 7AA.

Cook County and Floodwood kicked things off with the Vikings getting a 10 point 35-25 win over Floodwood. Leah Utities and Kaitlynn Linnell both hit double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.

Barnum pulled off a spectacular come from behind 18-16 win over Deer River. Cheyanne Johnson led the Bombers with five points including a three pointer which provided the final margin of victory for Barnum. The Bombers are led by first year head coach Katie Moench, who took the helm after the Bombers long time head coach Randy Myhre retired after the 2011-2012 season.

Clarissa Nelson’s 10 points helped Carlton to a tight 28-26 win over Two Harbors. Brooke Camps chipped in with seven points for the Bulldogs. Junior center Lane Schraufnagel led the Agates with 10 points.
