Chase Vogler’s remarkable collegiate career may be slowly coming to an end, but the University of Minnesota Duluth senior quarterback showed Saturday afternoon that he still has plenty left in the old tank.

Vogler, making his 50th career start, passed for three touchdowns and ran for another score in propelling the ninth-ranked Bulldogs past the University of Mary 55-14 at James S. Malosky Stadium. UMD, now 9-1 overall, bolted to a 31-7 halftime lead while cruising to its 39th consecutive NSIC home triumph, a run which stretches back to the 2000 season, and improving to 6-0 all-time versus the Maruaders (4-6).

“I felt good today throwing the football,” said Vogler, who connected on 19 of 24 passes for 260 yards in three quarters of work. “I thought our offensive line, running backs, and receivers did a great job in doing what they needed to do and it showed in the final score.”

Vogler hooked with three different wide outs — junior Joe Reichert (39 yards) and sophomore Zach Zweifel (15 yards) and Aaron Roth (32 yards) — in boosting his season touchdown pass total to a career-high 19. Quarterback Jon Lynch also contributed to the UMD cause, hitting fellow senior Collin Stinogel with a pair of four-quarter scoring strikes — the first touchdown passes for Lynch and first touchdown receptions for Stinogel in two years.

The Bulldogs rolled up 564 yards of total offense on the afternoon, including 270 on the ground, and limited Mary to 251 overall yards. Junior strong safety Travis Nordhus finished with a team-high nine total tackles and one interception while junior inside linebacker Colby Ring had eight stops for a UMD defense that has allowed just 34 points in the last 18 quarters.

“They’re is really kind of clicking now,” said Vogler of his defensive mates, “Whenever they can play like they did today, I feel like we have a good chance to win every game.”

The Bulldogs, who trail league-leading Minnesota State University-Mankato by one game in the NSIC standings, will put the wraps on the 2012 regular season next Saturday (Nov. 10) at home against Northern State University.
