Shady – Welch Win Section 7A Cross Country Titles

Former state cross country champion Marisa Shady has again helped the Lady Eskomos capture the Section 7A title at the Cloquet Country Club on Thursday. Shady won her third consecutive Section 7A individual title. Matt Welch of Proctor won the Section 7A boys individual championship running away to help Proctor win the Section 7A team title.


Esko won the girls team title with a total of 45 points, well ahead of the second place finisher International Fall, who finished with a team score of 103. It was South Ridge who finished third with a team total of 116.


Shady finished first with a time of 15:30; her teammate Kailee Kiminski was second in a time of 15:42, and Megan West of Mesabi East was third with a time of 15:47. Gracelynn Otis of South Ridge was fifth overall, while ML-WR’s Nicole Tekippe finished ninth, and Esko’s Kallyn Knutson finished 12th overall.


The Rails in capturing their section title finished with a team total of 53, which narrowly edged out the Esko boys, who finished second with a team total of 55. Crosby-Ironton was third overall as they finished with a total of 71.


Welch, the Section champion finished with a time of 16:19 overall, Danny Radtke of Mesabi East was second with a time of 17:21, and Jacob Welch of Proctor was third in a time of 17:27. Proctor’s Zach Smith finished seventh in the boys race.


Ben Mattinen of Esko was fifth overall and teammates Joey Johnson finished seventh, Ben Hanson 10th, and Matt Rengo placed 12th on the day. Cromwell-Floodwood’s Nick Koenig was 11th overall in the Section 7A cross country race.


Cloquet’s Dylan Marvel finished 10 overall in the boys Class AA section meet in Princeton, as he led the Lumberjacks to a fifth place team finish. Natalie Stauber of Hermantown was seventh in the girl’s Section 7AA race. Both Stauber and Marvel now advance to the state cross country meet which will be held November 3rd at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
