Daniel Warpula scored three touchdowns Wednesday night as the Barnum Bombers cruised to a 57-20 victory over the Warriors of Deer River. The Bombers jumped out to a 38-0 halftime lead and easily went on to the 38 point win that assured the Bombers the Bombers the number one seed in Section 7A and also brings with it the Great Polar League Red Conference title.

Warpula had another big night for the Bombers Wednesday; entering the contest against Deer River Warpula was one of the top local rushers with 668 yards rushing and over 1172 all-purpose yards. Warpula is also one of the area’s top scorers this season with 72 points entering Wednesday’s game.

Warpula put the Bombers in front 6-0 on a 13 yard run in the first quarter, and that was quickly followed by a Bombers blocked punt which led to a 9 yard Zach Peterson touchdown run and a 16-0 lead after the first quarter.

Following a Deer River fumble, the Bombers marched 80 yards down the field which was capped off by a Colton Selix 9 yard touchdown run. Warpula scored his second touchdown of the game with four minutes left in the second quarter, this time it was a 22 yard scamper and the two point conversion and the Bombers led 32-0.

The Warriors next possession saw the Bombers John Zymslony force a Warrior turnover and the Bombers went down quickly and scored again as Cody Shelgren scored on a 2 yard touchdown run with 3 minutes to play in the first half. Shelgren’s touchdown run was set up by a nice pass to Mitchell Weller that was a huge gain down to the Deer River 2 yard line.

The second half started as Warpula scored his third touchdown of the night when he ran the second half kickoff back 83 yards for the Bombers touchdown and a 45-0 lead. Mitchell Weller scored his first touchdown of the season as he ran in from 7 yards out the Bombers led 52-0 early in the third quarter.

The Warrior’s reeled off the next three touchdowns to cut into the Barnum lead but the end result was never in doubt. Tanner Fuglestad ended the scoring for both teams as he broke free and scored on a 42 yard touchdown run with three minutes left in the fourth quarter as the Bombers rolled for the sixth straight win.

The Bombers move to 6-2 overall on the season with the win Wednesday and will receive the top seed in the Section 7A playoffs. They will open at home Tuesday night when they will face Ogilvie in the first round of the playoffs. Barnum beat the Lions earlier this season by a score of 40-8.

The Deer River Warriors fall to 3-5 on the season overall and they will open the Section 7AA playoffs on Tuesday afternoon when they will face the Duluth Marshall Hilltoppers at Duluth Marshall High School.
