It was a busy week for the Superior boys soccer team. The Spartans tied Duluth Marshall on Thursday and on Saturday the fell on the road at New Richmond 3-1.

The tie against Marshall on Thursday was a big step for the Spartans as it was the first time in Superior school history that they did not lose to the Hilltoppers. Senior Ali Maamoun scored both goals for the Spartans, while one goal was assisted by senior Tyler Gravening and the other one was unassisted.

“The Spartans played as a team,” said Spartan coach Gabrial Mozzini. “All players were extremely focused all game long and they played solid defense, which guaranteed us the tie”

Against New Richmond the only goal for the Spartans was scored by senior Connor Anderson, and was assisted by senior Cameron Gray.

Even though it was a loss, head coach Mozzini said he was happy with the way the Spartans played. “New Richmond has a solid team this year, with a record of 13-3 and the average of 5.44 goals scored per game,” commented Mozzini. “We had couple of lapses, but I was pleased with the way we played defensively, mainly during the second half, when we did not get scored on”.
