A big third quarter enabled the Cloquet Lumberjacks to pull away from the Virginia Blue Devils on Friday night as the Jacks came away with an impressive 47-18 road win.

The Lumberjacks led 13-12 at halftime, but then scored 21-points in the third quarter, and then for good measure, they tacked on 13-unanswered points in the fourth quarter.

Marques Evans got the Jacks on the board early in the first quarter when he took a handoff from quarterback Sean Kedrowski and raced 17-yards to the end zone giving Cloquet a 7-0 lead after the extra point kick by Nick Niemi.

Virginia answered back against Cloquet when Cade Stackpool slashed his way into the end zone from the six yard line cutting the Jacks lead to 7-6, but the extra point kick sailed wide allowing the Lumberjacks to maintain a lead at 7-6.

Kyle Klatt gave Cloquet an even bigger lead in the second quarter when he bolted in off tackle from the 25-yard line giving the Jacks a 13-6 lead, but Niemi’s extra point attempt missed the target leaving Cloquet up by seven.

The Blue Devils cut that margin to 13-12 when Mitch Sella romped 71-yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter, but Stackpool’s conversion attempt failed leaving Cloquet up by a point entering intermission.

Cloquet blew the game open in the third quarter when they got back-to-back scores by Austin Gotchnik and Kaleb Kadelbach. Gotchnick scored on a 43-yard touchdown run and Kadelbach caught a Kedrowski pass from the five-yard line to make it 27-12 after the extra point kicks by Niemi. The Blue Devils did manage to cut the gap to 27-18 after another long touchdown run by Sella midway in the quarter, but the Jacks wasted little time in posting yet another score when Evans burst to a 55-yard touchdown run which pushed the score to 34-18 at the end of three quarters.

Kedrowski started off the fourth quarter by finding Kadelbach in the open and Kadelbach did the rest by racing 47-yards for the score as Cloquet went up 41-18. Cloquet ended the scoring with a score from the defensive side of the ball when Max Brenner slipped in front of a Stackpool pass and bolted 48-yards for the pick six score for the Jacks.

At quarterback Kedrowski was 11-of-18 for 138 yards, while Gotchnik ran for 138 yards and Evans ran for 116 yards as Cloquet rolled up 316 rushing yards in the game.

With the win the Jacks improved to 2-1 on the season and will play at home on Friday night against International Falls.
