Quietly, but what appears to be surely, the Cloquet girls soccer team is building towards the sectional playoffs. That work continued on Thursday when the Jacks handled Two Harbors 8-0. Six first half goals assured the Jacks they were on the way to a third victory of the season and improved their record to 3-3-2. The Jacks only losses have been to Twin Cities area schools and the two ties were against Princeton and Hermantown which are two of the top teams in the section.

In just the 2nd minute of the game the Jacks started their scoring onslaught when Maija Doran punched in a goal, with Anna Fossen assisting and in the 9th minute the Jacks Becca Hammond created an own goal by Two Harbors off of a corner kick for a 2-0 lead.

“It was a nice all around team game by the girls” Cloquet Head Coach Dustin Randall mentioned. With one of if not the top area goaltender in Kenzie Rathe, the fast start played right into the hands of the Lumberjacks. “We started quick with a deflection goal my Maija and an own goal off a Hammond corner kick, Randall added.”

It went to 3-0 when freshman Kayla Baker scored in the 14th minute, with an assist to Chelsea Baublitz, and when Anna Fossen scored from Doran in the 27th minute and the Jacks lead was at 4-0. Cloquet then knocked in back-to-back goals in the 37th and 38th minutes with the first coming from Kristi Konietzko on a free kick from 30 yards out and the second from Emily Wangen with Konietzko assisting.

Cloquet added two goals in the second half with the first coming from Hammond in the 48th minute, with an assist to Carley Esse, and the second goal coming late from Mikayla Baker with Grace Sinisalo assisting in the 79th minute.

Rathe and junior Emily Connor combined for three saves for the Lumberjacks while Sam Dewey stopped 12 of 20 shots for the Agates.

Both teams will be back at it on Tuesday. Cloquet will host Hibbing-Chisholm while Two Harbors pay a visit to the Eskomos of Esko-Carlton.
