Northland Sports Online’s girls basketball player of the year and Esko standout Savanna Trapp has verbally committed to UCLA and will attend college there next fall to play basketball for the Bruins. Trapp, who has been one of the most sought after high school athletes from Northern Minnesota in any sport made her decision Wednesday night, and reveled that decision on Thursday.

Trapp, who has been on Esko’s varsity team since eighth grade told Northland Sports Online “I went out to California after a long and grueling summer of basketball to relax and visit both UCLA and USC.” Trapp added “As soon as I walked on the campus I knew in my heart where I wanted to be.” “The coaches, the atmosphere was just right and after over more than a year of correspondence with UCLA I knew where I wanted to go.”

Trapp, who spent the summer playing basketball for her AAU team mentioned the trip to California was “a week to relax with my mom, but also a chance to visit two great schools.” Trapp had spent much of her summer playing tournaments from Minneapolis, to Chicago, Florida, Virginia Beach, and the Nike basketball nation tournament in South Carolina.

Trapp stated “With making my decision early, I can focus on school and getting ready for the upcoming season and hopefully a trip to the girls state basketball tournament.” Trapp decided not to participate in any fall sports; she had run cross country in years past but decided on letting her body rest after the long summer. Trapp mentioned she would “get in the weight room soon and get back to work soon.” “Most of my basketball teammates play one fall sport and some play two so we won’t get a lot of time in the gym.”

Trapp said “I knew I wanted to go to UCLA right away, but I wanted to come home and discuss it with my family before I committed; this was truly a family decision” Trapp added. “My family has spent so much time and resources on me playing basketball they needed to be included in the decision.” Savanna’s Father Scott, mother Krissy, sister Molly, and brother Adam all were part of the final decision.

Before Thursday Trapp had narrowed her decision down to 12 schools and personally called all 12 to let them know her decision before she announced it on Thursday. Colleges that were included in her final twelve12 included UCLA, USC, Minnesota, Iowa, Old Dominion, Utah, Wake Forrest, Boston College, TCU, New Mexico State, NDSU, and St. Louis.

Northland Sports Online would like to congratulate Trapp on her decision and wish her good luck in her future. She will sign her written commitment in November.
